oh jeans, how I loathe you

The problem with loving to bake and trying to perfect a chocolate chip cookie recipe is all the calories. My jeans (freshly washed and line dried so slightly shrunken) didn't fit this morning. I have been horrible at eating well save the nights KE and I cook together and make a full correct meal (meat, veggie, starch). I need, once again, to reevaluate what I'm eating. My favorite days are days that I bring veggies to snack on. Today I have red grapes, baby carrots and snow peas. I can fill up on those. I didn't have breakfast- the morning bagel, tasty as it is, is probably not the best way to keep a caloric budget. Not to mention that some mornings it is just too hard to get up early to eat breakfast (let alone exercise). I think this summer, when I'm working outside and on my feet all day, I will be bound to loose weight so long as I don't use it as an excuse to binge on unhealthy food all day. I've already looked up the farmer's market for the area I'll be staying and have been figuring out what kitchen things I will take with me. I think I just decided that I won't be taking any baking supplies. It'll be summer- I will have no excuse for not eating fresh fruits and veggies for those 3 months. I'll be keeping track of that on this site so hopefully we'll ass see some progress!

  1. my dear kaydee,
how you continue to awe me everyday, even after thirteen years!

here's what helped me to lose weight naturally:
-beans, EXCELLENT source of protein and dietary fiber. also low in fat. i buy all of my beans in bulk, and soak them for 1-2 days with water, a splash of (Bragg's live) apple cider vinegar, and a small piece of kombu (kelp... found at health food stores and asian markets).

--both the apple cider vinegar and kombu aid in digestion (ie- less/no more farting), and increase your metabolism.

-i also recommend putting about 1 tbspn of apple cider vinegar into your water with each meal. you get used to the taste, i promise! in a nutshell, it is super good for you! here's why: http://www.apple-cider-vinegar-benefits.com/

-seaweed, seaweed, seaweed!!! another metabolism booster that is DELICIOUS! my friend christine taught me how to make sushi the other day. it's super easy, and nutritious! i also eat pieces of nori seaweed with my (wild or brown) rice and beans. YUM!!!

-finally: EAT YOUR BREAKFAST!!! this is the most important meal of the day, and it helps to set our metabolism for the rest of the day! (your metabolism is actually sluggish without it!) here's what i eat every morning:
-about 3/4 to one cup plain NANCY'S yogurt (i don't know if they sell Nancy's on the east coast, though. i would make sure to go for whatever yogurt has the least fillings... ie: all sugars come from the milk, and none are added!)
-a handful of granola (next step... learn to make my own)
-fruit topping (i either add reheated frozen blueberries, bananas, or apples-which i have precut and stored in the fridge in an airtight container)
-12-16 oz of CAFFEINE! i go for coffee, because hey, it's Portland... but green tea is much much much better for you, and gives you a more sustained caffeine boost!

-if you feel like you don't have the time in the morning for breakfast (secret: half the time, i am putting my make-up on and eating breakfast at the same time...), i would go for a breakfast bar. something with the least amount of fillers and NO HIGH FRUCTOSE-CORN SYRUP!!!! Luna Bars are a good option, and they supply up to 200 calories, i believe.

-mmm... and a great snack: cut up slices of red pepper, or cucumber with salt! YUM!

  2. I think it's all about finding a balance that works for you. Like, I find that if I'm desperately trying to save money AND be healthy AND lose weight then it becomes overwhelming and I overcompensate by baking a bunch of cookies one weekend. Whereas if I focus on do able thing - like making sure I eat a serving of fruit and a yogurt with lunch, and get to the gym twice a week - then the changes are much more likely to "stick."

I hear you, though. Baking projects are not great for the waistline!
